Activity 5: How we assess- assessment tools

Self-Activity 5
  1. Create an assessment tool which you could use to assess assessment tools
  2. Use your assessment tool to assess the  five assessment tools listed on the schoolnet site.
When doing so, consider to whom the assessment tool is directed. Is it personal and informative. Consider the amount of detail provided in the criteria. Is it sufficient to provide constructive advice for improving a skill? How would you improve each assessment tool so that it fulfills your requirements for a good assessment tool?

  1. Is it sufficient to provide constructive advice for improving a skill? No. The person who is receiving the feedback ought to be open to it, or else it will be a wasted effort.

How would you improve each assessment tool so that it fulfills your requirements for a good assessment tool?
    Cooperative Group Work Assessment Tool
Comments: The criteria description of the scores need to be clearly written. The assessment tool needed students to be involved in using it.

    Cooperative Grouping Rubric Assessment Tool
Comments: The criteria, scores, and weighting of the scores need to be clearly described.

    Publication Scoring Guide Assessment Tool
Comments: The criteria need to be clearly described.

Self- assessment Rubric Group Work Assessment Tool
Comments: This rubric was very well done due to all the elements of constructing an assessment tool were evident.

Group Participation Assessment Rubric Assessment Tool
Comments: The criteria for the group participation need to be clear.

All the assessment tools can be used by individuals, peers and teacher once there is clear description of the criteria, scores and weighting, and indication of who will be using them is also clear.

    1. Terry-Ann, I found your assessments were spot on. I don't know If I was wrong but I kept looking for the objective for each rubric.

    2. Hi Esther,

Thanks for observing that most important aspect. All seem to lack a written description of how to use the assessment tool along with the learning outcome or objective. Yes, you're right with what you observed.

  3. Very well put together criteria. Should the person who will be using the tools possess any particular knowledge?

  4. Cooperative Group Work
The criteria section needs to be clearly defined, the description of the tasks is not clearly defined. the assessment tool is teacher centred, objectives not spelt out.
    Cooperative grouping Rubric
Marking scheme is not easily understood, no objective. However the criteria are clearly defined.
    Publication scoring guide
The rubric has no objective and the criteria are unclear
    Group work rubric
The rubric was well constructed however there was no place for the student to place their names.
    Group Participation rubric
    Criteria need to be defined.
