Assignment 3

This assignment has four parts:

  1. A short, (±250 words) description of your old unit, including the learning objective(s), learning activities, and integration of ICT. (NOTE: the old version of the unit may not have integrated ICT, but in this introduction, explain how ICT will be added in the future.) The purpose of this summary is to give your audience a context for the assessment strategy you will describe in section B.
  2. A brief description of the old unit’s assessment strategies, and your reflections about how they could be improved— including, but not limited to, the assessment of ICT-integration. Describe at least two areas for improvement of formative assessment. (±500 words)
  3. Describe (±500 words) the new assessment strategy for the unit, and give reasons for the changes you made. The description should reference assessment of ICT integration, but may also include assessment of other aspects of the learning objectives. In addition, explain how the two tools (Section D, below) will be used to assess a process of learning and a product of learning. (See Activity 2 for explanation of the distinction between process and products of learning.)
  4. Include the two assessment tools. Both assessment tools must reference aspects of ICT integration. One tool should focus on a process of learning, the other on theproduct. (You may adapt or re-use tools from Assignment 2, if appropriate.)

  2. You will receive 1 set of feedback. In each case provide feedback on how well that person has given you feedback, based on the principles of good feedback. Copy your tutor on the feedback email that you send to your peer.

The three focus areas of information that you should choose from in this activity are reference resources, new resources or current data resources. You will plan a lesson and integrate assessment methods and tools with that lesson.

Assignment 2

ASSIGNMENT 2 - Evaluating the use of assessment tools for ICT integration


Create formative assessment tools for ICT integration

This assignment is to be completed once you have completed Activity 5.
What to do:
In this assignment you will focus on fine-tuning formative assessment tools that you can use in the classes where you integrate ICT. You will be required to create and submit 5 assessment tools.
1. Design 5 formative assessment tools that you or your colleagues (teachers) could use in the learning environment. (50)
Use these 5 templates (either use a word processor or a spreadsheet) for the assignment:
  • Assessment tool 1 Word
  • Assessment tool 2 Word
  • Assessment tool 3 Word
  • Assessment tool 4 Word
  • Assessment tool 5 Word
2. Be sure to focus on assessing the processes and products of ICT integration but also include the assessment of learning objectives. Each assessment tool must include at least one aspect of ICT integration and at least one learning objective. (10)

  1. Create an assessment tool which you could use to assess assessment tools
  2. Use your assessment tool to assess the  five assessment tools listed on the schoolnet site.
When doing so, consider to whom the assessment tool is directed. Is it personal and informative. Consider the amount of detail provided in the criteria. Is it sufficient to provide constructive advice for improving a skill? How would you improve each assessment tool so that it fulfills your requirements for a good assessment tool?

Activity 2- What we assess

Group Activity 2

1. Firstly consider what you do in your classes including, but not confined to, the integration of ICT, and how you assess this. Then take into account what you have read about concerning process and product. Make a list of all the things that you assess.
2. Write an e-mail to the group in which you complete the following sentence:
We can assess how learners...
for example you could add items such as:
  • remember things
  • draw a picture
  • communicate with each other
    and many more....
3. Compile a list of what we assess based on the ideas and experiences of your group as you read their e-mails.
4. Divide this list into things that you already assess in class and things that you have not assessed before.
5. For items that you have not assessed before, indicate how you could in future include these in assessment then share on the course blog.
6. Conclude this activity by making reflective comments in your blog.

Evaluating the influences of current or past assessment practice

This assignment is to be completed once you have completed Activity 1.
What to do:
Use the self-assessment survey and the learner survey to evaluate your assessment practice and the learners' perceptions of your assessment practice.
  • A summary of the survey results and reasons for the assessment methods and tools that you use. (20)
  • Analyse and give reasons for the difference/similarity in your own and your learners' view of your assessment practice. (20)
  • Evaluate your assessment practice in the light of curriculum principles. (20)
  • Outline the changes in assessment practice that you think are most important to implement. Alternatively, justify why you think that your assessment practice is completely appropriate. (40)

Activity 1

Reflecting on your assessment practice 
This is a self-analysis activity. Use the comment feature below this post for communicating with the group. The milestone date for this activity is 29 January.


Group Activity 1

In this activity we have decided on a self-assessment method, using a questionnaire as the assessment tool. In this questionnaire you will see that the questions indirectly refer to many different types of assessment practice.
  1. Score your current assessment practice using the questionnaire provided. Go to the file called Review of current practice to find the questionnaire. 
  2. Use the learner questionnaire to find out what your learners think about your assessment practice. Note that in this case you are using the same tool (same questions and criteria) but applying it to a learner-review method. Learner reviews are among the most threatening, yet brave, things that a teacher can do.
      
  3. How do you feel about the results of the questionnaire. Do you think it gives an accurate reflection of how you use assessment in your classes? Share your thoughts by commenting on the below (using the subject heading "Assesment review"). Explain what you have learnt from the exercise.
